Scrappy Room in Progress

Can you believe it... I've posted 4 days in a row... Don't get used to it... lol. No really I want to get back to posting at least 3 days a week instead of just my 2x a month that I have been doing lately.

My new scrap room is coming along nicely & is about 80% organize.  I guess I could call it "a studio" but for some reason that implies someone is an artist & I just feel like a crafter who dabbles in art.  It's a joy to create in.  Keeping it cleaned up after each layout is super easy (even when I drag out a bunch of stuff to audition it) since everything has it's place.

I thought I would share some photos of the progress I've made.   I hesitated posting photos before I've got it spotless like most rooms I've seen but since I'm taking so long & have gotten the requests I'm sharing how far I've gotten.   I'm still changing things around as I use them - but that's what organizing is about finding what works for you & what you'll keep up with. 

A lot of my storage is repurposed from the thrift store.  Hobby Lobby also has amazing metal storage that is very inexpensive when on sale.  I also like the boxes from Ikea - they hold a lot & give an organized look to shelves while still providing easy access to my supplies.  As long as I look in them often I can keep in mind what I have.  I am very visual & like to see my goodies so I try to display & store them in view if possible or I forget about them. 

I have very long windows with deep window sills.  Perfect for storing bottles & smaller jars.  My buttons are sorted by color.  (I need to get some more of the small jelly jar size so that all are uniform)

With windows on 2 sides & a built in unit on the 3rd it only leaves me half of a wall (since the 4th has double french doors into the family room) for my hanging storage (which in my last room was how I stored the majority of my items).

Hanging painted shelf (bought at Goodwill store) holds buckets with ATC & Tags from swaps and the pegs hold my aprons (both vintage & usable) along with my garden hat.  The wire basket contains chipboard mini albums.  I don't have a lot but the wood mounted Unity Stamps hang perfectly using binder rings on an old CD rack that has wine logo.  The small metal storage holds my dozen Stampin' Up sets & foam stamps.  The basket on top holds several sets of acrylic stamps that didn't fit on the Clip it Up.

These are yard sale Pottery Barn shelves on opposite side of the french doors.  They hold my ribbon sorted by color in canning jars & my flowers.

Metal hanging pegs hold:  bucket of decorative edge scissors, 7 Gypsies word stickers (one of the few stickers I still love);  old Panasonic radio from the 70's lol, and yet another gardening hat.

Under those shelves is an inexpensive shelf unit from Staples.  It houses the rest of my flowers, magazines, unmounted Unity Stamp sets in a basket, boxes containing Thickers, and vintage box a "pea" made me during a swap.

I was fortunate enough to have a wall of built in storage.  It includes 4 sets of drawers (3 shallow & 1 file) and 4 sets of shelves 3 high in addition to the workspace.

The metal breadbox is great for storing just about anything.  My Glimmer Mist is in view & easy reach.  The Ikea boxes store a variety of things:  pins, bling, embellishments, chipboard, Thickers, etc.  All labeled & easy to go thru & then put away.

The large boxes on the workspace are where I store my scraps.  Top holds patterned paper & bottom holds cardstock.  This works better for me than having it sorted out since I was bad about filing them & this way I have "happy accidents" with color combos that I wouldn't have used had they not been next to eachother in the box.  I use a lot of the crochet string & keep them in this pedistool wire basket.  My small ink pads are kept together using this multi-tiered silver flea market find.  The center of the storage unit is a desk area perfect for the sewing machine.

Here is another section of shelves that house my lace in jars & ribbon on spools stored on a decorative colorful cake plate bought a Hobby Lobby on clearance for $2.18!

On that same shelf... Markers are hard to store since they should be kept horizontal.  This wire holder drives me crazy since the pens can fall everywhere when the cats bump them - need something new. Name sign was made by http://emiscrapbooking.blogspot.com/ for each of us attending the yearly breast cancer crop.   Heidi Swapp photo corners are stored in a little metal bin from Target $ spot.

Here's my new Clip it Up (yes I finally have a real one & have retired the fake paper towel version).  This is perfect to store all the unmounted Unity Stamps I get with my kit of the month subscription.  They are sorted by type.  I've also stored my acrylic stamps on this unit.  Much better than my CD cases (that were falling apart) in the desk drawers.

The base unit & 2nd tier are on my desk along with a bin for small letter storage (love these & stock up on them in case they are discontinued), 2 bins for small journaling spots (bigger ones are in a basket on floor next to desk), Making Memories tool spinner that I bought with a Michael's gift certificate my best friend Lori gave me for my b'day last year, behind it (you can barely see it) is a spinning plastic container unit (matches my desk cubes) that I got on clearance at Michael's last month that holds my most used brads, eyelets, clips and other small metal items (I  use them lots more now that they are within reach), and you can also see the the swing arm Clip it Up hanging between the windows (the one I won on their blog in Feb).

I know it looks cluttered but this leaves a lot of space for me to work on 2 Basic Grey magnetic mats to the left.  My desk is made up of 3 sets 2 high of storage cubes from Michaels & a door blank for the desk top.

Ok so now you have an idea whatmy room looks like.  In case you were wondering the color is Olympic Quaking Grass C68-3.  With all the light pouring in from windows & sky lights I needed a color that wouldn't just wash out.  It's a very pretty green.  The trim is Swiss Coffee (my favorite white for trim).

I have to say how pleased I was with all the Olympic paint we bought to paint the entire house.  Since they've gone "green" and all the paint is NO VOC and there was no just painted smell.  It covered very well even over the horrible red that was in the foyer & the neon yellow in the living & dining rooms.

Grandpa

My Grandpa holds a dear place in my heart & even after almost 14 years since he passed I still miss him terribly.  We may have lived 12 hours apart (once we moved to Geogia in '79)  but we talked on the phone daily & would spend as much time as I could with them.  This kept us closer than many people who lived in the same town.

This one has a gift I gave him one Chistmas in the background.  He truly loved it & was so proud my crewel embroidery Christmas scene & it hung in the living room for all to see year round.  He would draw very childish scenes to tell stories about his childhood or picture all of us doing fun winter things and send them to me.  So when I saw this piece in the embroidery store I knew I had to make it for him.  So many months of work in the evenings and weekends allowed me to complete it on time.

Last but not least this photo of my grandpa painting the fence really cracked me up because he was the least handy man around.  My grandma always did all the painting & fixing things because she knew he sure wasn't good at it & would usually make a mess of it.  But when she started getting symptoms of Alzheimers he did more things around the house because at that point she was still able to do things but he was taking good care of her & pampering her so got it done before she could even start.

My buddy (or should I say pest since he tears into the garbage since the garbage company hadn't  dropped off our dumpster -I guess that makes it their fault and not the critters... it only took them 3 weeks but they took our $58 a quarter real fast - that's a lot when we were only used to paying $6 a month when we were in the city limits... sorry tangent lol) that visits outside the window of the scrap room (he drives Rosie crazy but doesn't even budge with all her barking & jumping at the window) says bye too

I guess I should name him since he is there everyday... what do you think?

Flashback Friday Catch-Up

I used to be very active in the Layout a Day (LOAD) & Flashback Friday (scrap our childhoods) groups over at 2peas.  It seems like forever since I've been a regular with health problems then falling in December really kept me from doing what I love.  These ladies are so talented, sweet & encouraging - I have been missing them terribly.

So here are a couple of pages from my childhood....

My mom has a darker complection like her mother.  She was into getting a suntan one summer so my sister & I wanting to be like mom were sun obsessed too.  The color theme of the page was inspired by my bathing suit (pink) though mom should have gotten me something that looked better on my not so skinny body - at least I was just in the back yard.  It's hard to see the photo anyway I haven't quite gotten the hang of how you get the photo to still look as good as the layout does in person.

The clothes line is perfect for this page since we had our laundry hanging just out of sight on a spinning umbrella looking clothes line.  After breakfast that was our chore before tanning.

I won a class from Tania Willis over at Debbie Hodge's sight last month all about home made embellishments.  She showed how to make epoxy looking layered buttons.  I always want to buy all the embellishments that come with the new lines but they can get costly really quick.  American Crafts are some of the most expensive yet these were easy to make & gave a similar effect.

The other page is a poor quality but special photo of a memoriable Thanksgiving spent with neighbors at the last minute.  All of us didn't have other family to gather with out of town that was the usual... so we all got together & had a great time.  We even all got dressed up to make it more special.  This is only photo I still have of all the kids playing Monopoly.  No it's not the greatest photo but it is a great memory to me.  So I encourage you to use any photos you have to tell the stories you want to scrap - even if it's not so hot - don't let it hold you back.

I altered the Prima flowers a bit to make more of a statement on the page.  Layering several flowers, a piece of toille & a special gem center made them look like they would have cost $4.99 for the 3 of them if they were packaged.

Scrapping Joy

I've found my scrapping joy again.  I guess part of it is feeling better & the other part is having an organized new room to create in.  Last week I managed to make 6 layouts which is more than I've made in each of the 3 prior months when it was all I could do to keep up with my design team assignments...

I thought I would share a few of them today.  Heritage pages is one of my favorite topics to scrap now.  My boys are grown so they don't let me take as many photos of them anymore - though I do manage to lay some of the mom guilt on them to get my fair share lol.  Digging out the some photos from my childhood or old family allows to me to remember those everyday moments that are so easily forgotten or find out some stories that I've never heard by talking to older family members.  I guess even photos from my boys childhoods could be considered going back in time since they are both in their 20's now.  Scrapping their photos again (since those books were damaged several years ago) always brings a smile to my face & warms my heart.

So todays post is going back to the boys childhoods....

I found some of those special photos (though poor quality due to water damage) that really showcased Andrew & Brandon's personalities during a simple trip to the park.  They were so different.  Andrew was cautious and Brandon was a daredevil (making my heart skip a beat many times & I lost count how many times we ended up in the ER with bumps & broken bones).  This inspired the title "Opposites" because that is what they are.

Brandon's 3rd grade class put on a little Christmas program.  One of the songs was Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.  So that made the perfect title for the layout "Little Stars" since it spoke of the song & kids at the same time.

I can't believe I did 2 colage style pages.  I love the look of them but usually struggle with them getting the sizes of photos right.  Noell at Paperclipping here.has a couple great video tutorials about it that helped me a lot.  The key is to let Photoshop do a lot of the work for you in sizing the pictures.  Practice makes anything easier right?  Along with a great teacher.  That was the best investment I made in my scrapping knowledge - even better than books.  I'll never give up my membership at Paperclipping..

These are both 12x12 layouts.  Vigi asked me recently what size I normally did as she was having trouble with smaller sizes.  I guess normally I still do 12x12 the most.  It depends on the number of photos I have & amount of journaling for a layout which size I will pick.  Since I put all the sizes in the 12x12 album by just inserting the different size page protectors that doesn't play into my decision at all.  I like the fact that the different sizes add interest to my albums (more like a mini in that way).  I love the look of 8x8 and it really stretches your supplies; but if you are using more than 1 uncropped 4x6 photo it gets a little difficult to design without looking crowded.  I guess what got me comfortable with doing smaller size layouts was when I started doing a page swap over in the Paperclipping Forum where I was forced to make 6x6 size pages.  The first one was so hard for me I ended up doing a color photocopy at Kinkos of a 12x12 page for each of the ladies (I still feel guilty about that - since they sent me beautiful originals) but I only had large scale supplies).  Now after 7 rounds I've gotten the hang of it & even do pages with 3 or more photos with lots of journaling - the key is to use Photoshop & make small cut sheets.

Flower Tutorial... my take on the monthly challenge.

I had a great time doing Teresa's challenge for Everything Scrapp'n.  She really inspired me and I started playing around with products to make some interesting flowers that had that high end look for just pennies.  So in addition to sharing my layout I am sharing a tutorial how I made the flowers today.

Ok so the challenge was to:
use 3 flowers on a layout (either homemade or altered to make them your own)
use some blue - that will remind us of Spring rains that nourishes the soil
include some yellow or gold - to represent the warm Spring sunshine

This challenge really brought out the best in me so I hope you will enter a project for your chance to win a tin of some of my favorite Prima flowers (love the newsprint).

First I'll share my finished project....  "Love at First Sight" is a layout about our new home

The journaling reads "From the moment I saw the listing on FMLS I knew this was the house for us.  After a long search that started at Thanksgiving I could see God's plan and all the stress and lost houses was worth it.  We have lots of different living spaces & bedrooms to spread out in the 3300 sq ft.  Even a sunroom with built in storage perfect for scrapbooking made my heart flutter.  Andrew has a separate suite & is closer to work.  We love it!"

Titlework - I like to mix up fonts when creating my titles.  It adds interest and no one notices when I don't have a certain letter in the main font. (Yep it happened no "s" in the chipboard so I used the fabric Thicker to spell out "first")

A cluster of embellishments at the bottom weights the page & draws the eye around the layout.  All the details on the page reinforce the themes of home & love.  The calendar was perfect to circle the date of the closing when the dream became a reality.

Now for the Vellum Flower Tutorial. 

I was going to do a video but since I don't have a tripod I rely on one of my sons to hold the camera & none were around so still photos will have to do.

I love the Webster's Pages vellum but the pink wasn't the color I needed for these flowers so I started brainstorming how to get a similar look with other supplies. 

I have this tracing paper in my stash.  It was a $ dollar spot $ item at Michael's.  It works perfect for this technique

Many of the magazines have been showing flowers using heart punches so that inspired me in this tutorial.

I folded the tracing paper to keep it from jamming the large McGill heart punch (my clearance treasure which was only $2.22 at Hobby Lobby).   It also made quick work of punching the "petals" for the flowers.  (sorry for the sunshine shadow... lol)

I scattered the hearts in a shallow box to contain the overspray from Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists.  This box is what the upper tier of my Clip It Up Upper Tier came in - it's a keeper.

I used Olive Vine green for the base petals. 

After swirling your bottle to stir up the glimmer (don't shake or it will clog your sprayer).  I always do a test spray away from the items to see how much ink comes out of that particular bottle.  Spray lightly. 

Notice how the tracing paper curls as I sprayed them.  This is fine and they straighten out when dry & it will aid in getting color variations from the spray. 

Then I placed the hearts to be used for the top of the flower that I sprayed Raven purple.  Leaving the green hearts in the box allowed some of the overspray to add interest & depth to the colors.

Taking a paper towel to blot the excess ink.  Don't rub as this will muddy the color & you will lose the spray droplets that add texture & depth.

I then used the heat gun to finish drying the hearts.  They will scatter around slightly as the moisture evaporates and no longer adheres them to the box - but the box was high enough to keep them from flying around the room lol.  If this is a problem use a stylis or skewer to hold them in place while still keeping your hands away from the heat.

Crumble each heart up lightly.  Inking the edges & the creases with a bit of Chestnut Roan Colorbox chalk ink gives subtle definition.

Use a liquid adhesive like Beacon 3 in 1 to adhere the hearts to form your flower.  I just put a small amount of glue in the center and along the narrow edge of the heart leaving the upper part free to move & mold to add dimension.

Start arranging the hearts in s circle by slightly overlapping them. 

I used 5 as my base (odd number groupings look best).

and 3 hearts for the top layer.

Adding something to the center covers the overlaps and finishes the flower off.   Your imagination is the limit... Here simple large cream color buttons look great.

Adding purchased Prima flowers (these are the ones that are in the tin Heather is giving away for the prize) with a gemstone brad in the hole.

Finally I settled on the Jenni Bowlin chipboard buttons with a bit of twine knoted.

Getting Creative....

The camera cord is still missing & so to get these projects posted I had to get creative.... I took the photo card to Walmart & used the instant machine then requested that everything be saved to a cd.  It's not my usual photoshopped layouts since the desktop computer isn't hooked up but at least I got it done! lol

I love to mix and match patterned paper & embellishments from different lines.  Since I don't belong to any kit clubs anymore I have to pull things together myself to get that look.

My first layout was using super cute photos of my grown son when he was so young & sweet (not that he isn't still sweet).  Revisiting these old memories sure brings a smile to my face.

I love the whimsy of the Prima paper.  The clouds were perfect for telling this story.  For the center part of the page I used some of the Pink Paislee Cupid line.  The  blue & white hearts were a great match.  The green bottom third of the page kind of made me think of grass.  My Mind's Eye lime green dots anchor the page.

To make the sun I used a My Mind's Eye scallop circle die cut then for the center & then took my small scallop scissors to make the rays.  I used a small zig zag stitch to attach them.  Basic Grey flower bling added interest & kept with the theme.  The little bird was also a part of the die cut sheet.  To define the edges I doodled around with a fine black pen.  Adding one of the black Prima pearls from a flurish gave him and eye & it will not be missed when I use the rest of it on a page.  I'm all about stretching my supplies.  Sure when you use an entire flurish on on page $2.99 is a lot but when you break it up & use parts on multi pages it adds style on a budget.

The tag is from Pink Paislee Cupid.  I layered other tags/envelopes on top of it.  Rub ons are a great way to add depth, interest & say something at the same time.  To further add details to the ready made tag - I attached an eyelet then pulled a bit of stretchy cord to finish it off.

The rest of the package of  Basic Grey bling carried the floral theme from the tag to the page with loads of interest & dimension. 

Stitching in a similar color adds texture with a tone on tone look.  I love the decorative stitches that my machine can do with a press of the button.  A row of flowers in the titlework & basket weave at the bottom sure adds a lot of texture with little effort.  A favorite technique is to add a stitched line to my journaling strips adds interest & keeps me straight.

I love Nikki Sivils bread tags.  This time I painted it with a bit of acrylic paint then added a rub on.  I always take a fine emory board & rough it up a bit before painting to be sure the paint doesn't scratch off easily.  The package of 10 for less than $2.50 lasts a long time.

My second project is about my Dad.  He's such a thoughtful & generous man.  I wanted to capture the memory of his gift giving....

My Mind's Eye Bella is a very elegant line.  I love the soft colors & the background paper made quick work of design without sacrificing the details.

 

Stitching around the layout with the soft blue color and on the different layers anchored them & subtly draws the eye around. 

Adding stitched lines, ink & some ribbon makes an inexpensive office supply tag super special.

I like to use buttons in place of letters in my titles.  This big brown one is a perfect substitute for the letter "O".

Wow it seems strange to be on the internet.   I've been cut off from the world in every way since the move... no car (tag experied since Lexus didn't pass emmissions), no web, & no home phone (learning to talk quick so not to use a lot of cel minutes.   The house is getting organized since I have NO distractions lol.  The scrap room was almost finished & then the unthinkable... the new roof sprung a leak around the skylights during the 4 days of rain.  It's always something.  Well it's taken almost 2 weeks since the move to get the cable company to come out & put a booster on the house due to low signal and deliver a modem to us.  I know I have a loads of emails to read but I'm going to try to keep from falling back into my trap of hours spent on the web each day - try being the word lol.

Today is the Everything Scrapp'n Blog Hop.  My projects will be posted on Tuesday due to the roof leaking on my layout & card (in addition to the Cricut Expression... gasp yes it seems to be ok thankfully) and the fact that I haven't found the cords to link the camera and computer yet.  You all know me by now... it's always something lol.  But I hope you will hop along with the rest of the design team.  They have some pretty projects to inspire you.
