Knockoff Version of F.R.E.D.

Saw this podcast a while back showing a vertical workspace called F.R.E.D. Loved the idea and had to have one. DH said not right now..... so that got me thinking of what I could use since I had to have one NOW!

"MILES" IS OUR MODEL FOR OUR PRODUCT OF THE DAY.....

I had a cookbook stand and a magnetic dry erase board with a couple magnets. Target still sells these for about $21 for both but I'm sure you could find it cheaper shopping around. I snagged some magnets on clearance at my favorite Staples in Buford GA for $0.99+tax and I HAD A SUZ'S VERSION OF F.R.E.D. that will work for me. I even packed it up for a crop and it's not as portable as the original but for $1.05 out of pocket it works for me!

Hope I've given you some ideas on using stuff around your house to fit your needs for scrapbooking. If only I could come up with something on my own that others would knock off to fund my growing scrapbook addiction...... well I'll keep thinking.

Gearing up for National Scrapbooking Day

A special tribute page to my Grandmother. I always say everything good about me I got from her.....






I loved the way this page turned out the inspiration for the squares came to me while I was waiting for an MRI and the desk had that design on the front so I jotted a crude drawing in my little book I carry in my purse.


What kind of plans do you have to celebrate?
Friday I plan on checking out Archivers for a couple of freebies and coupons.

QVC is having some scrapbooking shows on thru the day so I'll try to check that out. DH is little upset with the cost of my "habbit" so I may have to find a way to fund my "addiction"

My LSS is having a 50% off sale of everything in the store. She just opened in the last couple months and every time I stop there she isn't open so I hope that doesn't mean she is closing but she needs to find her nitch. Enough of that... back to the fun stuff.

I plan on scrapping some pages at home on Saturday afternoon and then enjoying some quality time with my DH. It's supposed to rain here Saturday (every weekend for the last 7 weeks) so we wouldn't be riding the Harley.....

What I've been up to the last couple days....













I'm still catching up on very old stuff from my childhood and having fun doing it. I skip around from era to era and just put them in the albums as I go - I'm not a chronological type person so this keeps my attention better. I'm still trying to finish up all the page kits I made for the crop I went to. I made 28 of them and I'm not a fast scrapper so I don't know what I was thinking but it does make it easy for me to catch a little time here and there as I have it.

I love the 2 gallon ziplock bags I found at Aldi's for $1.99 perfect for scrapbook paper/kits. Much better than using the album page sheets from the dollar store (those are just a little shy of true 12x12 but very good quality.






I really liked the way this page turned out - I had a hard time with the red in my dress after photo shop original. I loved "decorating" the tree.

Busy Weekend

Packed my bags. I've gotten quite a collection of these Joann's scrapbooking totes. I snagged them all on clearence so have less than $20 in all 4 of them! Well all I can say is I match!

















The latest one opens I got Thursday and it opens up and holds a ton of stuff very organized - this is just the label. Not bad for $2.96

I tried to follow the rules by making page kits but didn't put the embellishments in the kits so ended up taking a lot of stuff and the totes served their purpose and held up. I have a better idea of what to expect and do the next big crop I attend.

These two are made with the Little Yellow Bicycle line of papers and I plan on submitting to 2peas challenge - maybe I'll win the bike....


Here are some of the layouts that I created during the "Flip Flop Crop" in Conyers GA on Saturday. I had such a good time. Met some great women and won some awesome prizes....



The beach page I won first prize using the supplies contained in the kit they gave us when we walked in the door.

It's amazing how different each person's take is with the same goodies given to them. I happened to take along some extra beach photos of many years ago in Daytona and the colors in the packet were just too bright for me so I used the white cardstock and the rules said all inks were ok so I dragged my trusty chalk cat eyes to make it look a little like sand (well the color at least) then I brought along a spray ink so the dots really did the trick for the effect. I am crazy about circles right now and the border punches so I had to put both of those in the design. Just enough ribbon and brads to add a nice touch to the edge. The buttons I took the time to sew on and the title was provided but I added the Daytona for my needs - which was still in the rules as long as I used the paper provided and another chance to use the Cricut. I won $10 in vendor merchandise for this one!



I paid to use a Cricut there for $5 - I was taking advantage of that. I had never used one before and they are the greatest!

Worked on a bunch of different old birthday pages of me. A rare chance to use my flowers......










These next 2 pages are very special to me. There are of friends at a favorite gathering each year at our church (Sunrise Baptist Church). They have a women's conference each year called Rubies of the Faith. This is 2005 and my best friend from Baltimore came to visit to attend and in the photo a dear prayer warrior friend that has since went home to be with the Lord is pictured beautifully in her turquoise shirt ..... Alfreda "Freda" Vincent..... she is so missed by so many but I can still picture her "with her tambourine up in heaven". She was originally from Liberia and was such a woman of God. The man serving us our meals is our pastor (don't find many churches like ours). Pastor David



Poe is the sweetest man and best pastor I know. His wife "Miss Billie" is always our keynote speaker and blesses our socks off. It's a special time for all and we all look forward to it each year.

Is Scrapbooking on it's Way OUT?

I was checking out the 2peas general scrapbooking board this morning with my breakfast and came upon this posting - made me start thinking.....

The LSS like any small business right now need to continue to evolve and find their nitch because we are out there buying that's for sure and as scrapbookers we need to look at where and how we buy before we complain or judge the store owners.

I think if the LSS did kits or clubs that would boost their business.

My local quilting shop does a "block of the month" where you pay $5 for the year and every month on a specific Sunday you bring your completed block in and get the next month at no charge. If you bring in on another day you have to pay for the block again $5 - as long as you are on time it's free and $5 for the entire year. The plus for the store is while you are there that day you buy other stuff. I would say that 75%+ of these people are buying on that day. That would be something different for a LSS to do.

But we as scrapbookers/consumers need to think about where/how we spend our scrapbooking dollars and not complain/judge our local stores too harshly as we are part of the problem. Sure we are going to want to get the most for our money and buy tools/supplies with our 40% off coupon or when they are on sale at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, AC Moore, Archivers, Target, Joanns, etc. But that is where our stores make their money. The LSS need to carry punches, tools, whatever that the chains don't carry so we have to buy from them. They don't make much on paper. Think about the overhead involved in the store building and hours for employees. Many of the LSS owners are at their store 7 days a week and I'm sure they aren't making much per hour if they broke it down that way.... Any small business is part "labor of love" but their comes a point that it makes no sense to keep losing money or giving away your time for free. We as scrapbookers/consumers think they can sit there and scrap all day in between customers and would love to do that. But the reality isn't all that rosey.

We like these people that have went out on a limb and put up their income/reputation/time/energy/talents/ etc to keep our passion of scrapbooking alive in today's economy but are we supporting them and the other question is are they supporting us with things we can't get anywhere else and making us want to drive xx miles to get to the few stores that are still open.

Well now that I've had a rant and shared my "expert business advice" ha ha

I just hope it will make people think and help the industry that we all love and need. I know you fellow scrappers who have more knowledge of the business can come up with better idea than I can. I just hope that the LSS start evolving before it's too late! My old boss used to say if you're doing something the same way you did 2 years ago you are losing money & time and it can be done a better way - you have to stay on top of the market not just be in the market. I really see how true that is in today's economy.

Homemade/Mock Clip it Up

CHEAP KNOCK OFF OF THE "CLIP IT UP"

I had been wanting to do the one that hangs on the wall or under shelves but since I've been booted out of my scraproom by my DS moving back home my DH wouldn't let me do anything on the walls in the dining room. It's that old 1950's pine paneling and he just loves it. He panics when I even hang a picture up. Anway after much searching and inspiration here is my take on the Clip It Up.......

I took the idea of some fellow scrapbooker and made my own version of a clip it up using a black metal paper towel holder purchased at Family Dollar for $4. Had a box of 50 Heavy Duty sheet protectors, 100 left over pieces of cardstock from Sams Cub & purchased a package of 1-1/2" binder rings at Staples for $1.99. I'm pleased with the results. This version holds a lot. I've found it works best using it like a stand up book. I did have some old little tiny weights that I found in an old tool box a while ago and taped it on the bottom using black electic tape so I don't even see it because it is a little top heavy. If I had the 2" binder rings I could have put 100 sheets of protectors on it. I put my letter stickers, masks, die cuts, in it and have lots of room for more stuff. It would even be great for acrylic stamps. I would guess if I bought all the materials it would have cost me less than $20 and it holds much more than the base and top version of the Clip it Up. Sorry for the glare in the photos.

The Rest of My Saturday Scrapping

My kitty had to get in on the playtime.....

That is DJ - (a.k.a Pom Pom Kitty because his favorite toy is pom poms from the craft strore) He will sit on my lap every time I am at the computer.... A couple years ago he broke our new printer by pulling a spring out - even Epson couldn't figure out how he did that one

I tried my hand at hidden journaling. On the back of a plastic tag in an envelope I wrote with a Slick Writer pen then slid it back into velum envelope. I liked the colors in this design - they were all in my son's outfit. Andrew at that age was so funny. We were "freaking out" because he didn't crawl - he would get up and rock then lay down and either drag himself or roll across the floor. The doctor wasn't concerned but as first time parents we weren't so sure. His poor cheeks were always red from the carpet.

This is a very special photo to me. My "Grumpy" (grandfather) as he was leaving to fly back home to Pittsburgh from Omaha. When we lived in Pittsburgh I was glued to him spending most of my day by his side. He was a piano player so worked in the evenings and that left all his daytime for me! I loved the way this page turned out. I used white chalk to stamp on the Bazzill to make it blend in with the Basic Grey - Two Scoops paper. The pattern on the paper in the border is a spot on match for the pattern in my jacket. Of course I used more Thickers - they are great! The hat I am wearing is what he bought me at the airport. I wore it for weeks after that!

I Had a Very Scrappy Saturday!

Hope you are having a blessed Sunday.

I spent most of Saturday scrapping and making up for last week of feeling so bad and doing NOTHING!

I tried some new stuff and was happy with the results. I love those "thickers" chipboard letter stickers. I used them everywhere!

When I was at Hobby Lobby milling around killing time before a doctor appointment looking for something like "Magic Mesh" and I saw plastic canvas on sale for 4 for $1 and thought that would be great on some of my boy pages so I picked up several colors to give it a try. It turned out great on the page I did of my boys in the tub. Had a little trouble securing it since I was out of my Herma glue so I hand stitched the edges with regular thread which worked.

I like scrapping all the different eras at the same time. It might drive some crazy but it challenges me and I don't keep with any color theme in each scrapbook - I just do what is right for the photos I am using on that page. That's what makes me happy and what I like.

Scrapping Friday

Haven't been doing much scrapbooking this week. Today I managed to complete 4 pages. My hubby is working tomorrow so I guess I'll try to do a couple more.

Trying to do a little organization every Friday. I'm so inspired by many of the Peas posting their amazing rooms and ideas. One day I'll have a room back but until then my goal is to hide or make less of an eyesore my area in the dining room. I know it can be done but it looks like I'll have to spend a little more than I want to right now to get it more hidden. I have quite a bit of supplies and my working style is to have everything in sight but I really don't like that in a common area so I am still brain storming what will work best for me. Our house was built in teh 50's so that means very little closet space so that's not an option and our laundry room isn't climate controlled so I can't store much in there. Any suggestions will be welcomed.

I worked on organizing my ribbons today. Started out using the foam board in the boxes I bought on clearance at Staples a couple months ago then ended up using the clothes pins in the jars for the rest until I ran out of clothes pins. Guess I'll finish in a day or two. Thank you Patter Cross for your suggestions and encouragement to me with organinzing and scrapbooking.
